Description
The modelling of a relativistic heavy ion collision is a
complex process involving multiple stages that follow very
different dynamics. While a fluid dynamical description of
the system is convenient near local equilibrium, it does not
hold for large deviations from equilibrium. We explore the
non-equilibrium behavior of a $0 + 1D$ longitudinally
expanding boost-invariant system via numerical solutions of
the Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE). We compare several
existing phase space models for the transition from a fluid
mechanical description to a particle description of a heavy
ion system, and evaluate these models against the full
numerical solution to the BTE. We propose modifications to
improve these models and ensure positivity of the phase space
distribution function. Further, we discuss the possible role
of the system's ``memory'' in shaping the distribution
function.
