Description
Earthquake is related to the deformation of the Earth's crust and its failure caused by plate tectonics, however, its mechanism is still challenging unsolved problem. Sometimes deformations along the plate boundaries (including earthquakes) are compared to frictional deformation. Friction laws are developed mainly by laboratory experiments and the equations are empirical. Rate- and state-dependent friction law is one of them, and several versions of the equation are reproduced (Dieterich, 1979; Ruina, 1983) although none of them cannot reproduce the experimental results completely. To propose a suitable friction law, frictional mechanism should be solved also theoretically. In the presentation I give a short survey of the main problems, some recent results and our related works (thermodynamical unification of Dieterich and Ruina laws).
